What Is CBD: A Guide To Our Favorite Cannabinoid

Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is one of more than one hundred phytocannabinoids found within the flowers of the hemp plant. It has rapidly grown to be one of the most talked about, naturally occurring compounds found in the plant. Although the recent buzz around hemp makes it seem as if it is a new concept, hemp has a long history and before prohibition was a staple crop grown right here in America. The passing of the 2018 Farm Bill reaffirmed the legalities of Industrial Hemp across the United States.

What Is CBD Used For?

Regarded as safe and non-addictive, Cannabidiol may very well be the answer to those looking for a viable, proven alternative to pharmaceuticals. Numerous studies show that CBD can provide natural relief for conditions such as anxiety, chronic pain, insomnia, PTSD, depression, and many others. Only as recently as the 90s, we discovered the truly fascinating role that our Endocannabinoid System (ECS) plays within our bodies.CBD & Endocannabinoid System Infographic

Our ECS is a biochemical communication system that acts as the body’s Chief regulatory system meaning that it’s key role is to work relentlessly to ensure all of our other physiological systems are in a constant state of balance or homeostasis. However, the ECS remains dormant unless it is nourished regularly with cannabinoids. This is due to the fact that the human body is armed with receptors that work exclusively with cannabinoids. These receptors reside on cell surfaces which can be “turned on”, or activated by the consumption of cannabinoids such as CBD, THC, and CBN.

There are two types of receptors, CB-1 which are primarily found in the brain and central nervous system, and CB-2 which is found in peripheral organs associated with the immune system such as your spleen, skin, bones, etc. When these receptors are activated by cannabinoids on a regular basis, our physiological systems that modulate our mood, appetite, pain, stress, blood pressure and our immune system response will begin to find balance and run optimally.

Choosing The Right CBD Product

Since the growing hype of CBD in recent years, there is now a growing selection of products to choose from. This industry is still very young and therefore remains unregulated, leaving CBD products vulnerable to both contamination and adulteration. Due to that fact, it can feel overwhelming and difficult to find quality, highly effective, trustworthy products amongst the vast options when all you’re trying to do is find the most effective option for your needs. Not all CBD is created equal so keeping that in mind and knowing what to look for when shopping can help you make confident, educated decisions.

In order to uncover the true extent of cannabinoids within any one product, you will have to look at the extraction process first. You will find that most CBD found in products within the industry typically use less efficient methods of extraction (i.e: Lipid, Co2, Isolate) and leave out most, if not all, of the incredibly beneficial phytonutrients that are essential for maximum efficacy and optimal absorption.

For instance, CBD Isolate is a highly refined powder containing only CBD. All of the plant matter, oils, waxes, chlorophyll, etc. are removed along with the rest of the cannabinoids and phytonutrients until only the “pure” CBD powder remains. At first, the term “pure CBD” can sound enticing but studies show that single, isolated molecule CBD is less effective than a CBD-rich oil containing a range of cannabinoids. There are over one hundred cannabinoids found within the hemp plant and they all synchronistically work together to potentiate relief, meaning isolate CBD can only do so much alone.

How Do I Take CBD?

If you are looking for the best way to consume CBD, a sublingual oil placed under the tongue is by far the best delivery method. The reason for this is because the skin covering the blood vessels under the tongue is very thin allowing for quick, direct absorption through the mucosal membrane into the bloodstream where then the cannabinoids can be picked up and carried to the cannabinoid receptors throughout the body. It is key to leave the oil under the tongue for 30 to 60 seconds for maximum absorption.

Sublingual Oil

A sublingual oil used consistently can begin regulating the body, restoring balance from the inside out. When looking around for CBD oils you may begin to notice discrepancies in servings from brand to brand. Most serving suggestions for the majority of CBD oils on the market will likely recommend up to FOUR servings of 1.0 mL in a single day due to their lower nutrient concentrations or understanding of the science, causing you to come back for another bottle, sometimes as quickly as just two weeks! We came across the same problem which is why we set out to create our own Hemp Extract to meet our standards.

Kingdom Harvest Natural | 10 MG/ML

Kingdom Harvest Combo Pack | 10 MG/ML

Kingdom Harvest Peppermint | 10 MG/ML

Kingdom Harvest Whole-Spectrum Hemp Extract™ is made from local hemp, organically-grown in Tuxedo, North Carolina at Kingdom of the Happy Land Farms and extracted nearby at Asheville Botanicals using organic ethanol. It sets itself apart by being very different from other sublingual products you will find in the CBD market space. Our unique processes make it possible for us to include the Whole-Spectrum of phytonutrients within a very small serving- only 0.25 mL twice daily. When the "whole spectrum" of phytonutrients is present in the finished product, the endocannabinoid system is activated such that a physiological response can often be recognized and described in the first few minutes after taking the product.

Smoking CBD

Consuming CBD by inhalation can be a great way to experience immediate relief whether you choose from smokable hemp flower or vape oils and cartridges. Inhalation makes for a near immediate absorption through the large surface area that are the lungs, passing through the alveoli and entering the bloodstream. When paired with a consistent regimen of sublingual oil, inhaling CBD can be a great addition for those needing quick, short term relief of conditions such as pain and anxiety. Although effects from inhalation can be felt almost immediately, for most. the effects typically only last between 2-3 hours.Smoking CBD Joint

Hemp flower in particular is rich in CBD. The ratio of CBD in hemp flower is much higher than that of THC. This is important because it can offer the beneficial effects of high-THC flower without the paranoia effects some can experience or feeling “high” due to the legal limit of less than 0.3%  THC content for industrial hemp. Many have found success using hemp flower to help with tobacco cessation, pain relief, anxiety and panic conditions, decreasing pharmaceutical use, or just to simply help wind down and relax during the day or evening.

The most classic and common way to experience hemp flower is by smoking it, however, for those wanting to avoid smoke inhalation, vaping hemp flower is also an option to avoid the harshness of inhaling smoke. This can be achieved by using a dry herb vaporizer to vaporize the terpenes and cannabinoids without combusting the flower itself and creating smoke.

The most important thing to note when thinking about experimenting with hemp flower is to ensure the product is from a trusted source; is clearly labeled and has been properly tested by a third-party, independent lab, verifiable via a certificate of analysis proving that it is free of any unwanted contaminants such as pesticides, heavy metals, toxins and mold.

We recommend our wide selection of organically-grown hemp flower from Carolina Hemp Flower. We have handpicked trusted farms in Oregon to supply us with top shelf, quality hemp flower. Our selection of strains to choose from continues to expand, giving you the opportunity to try from several strains with varying terpene and cannabinoid profiles. These can provide different potential effects depending on the strain, allowing you to find what works best for you for pain, anxiety, sleep, etc. and further tailor your preferences.

Topical CBD

Those experiencing localized discomfort, whether it be due to chronic pain caused by arthritis or similar conditions, or the occasional, everyday aches and stiffness, may benefit from a topical product to target a specific area, easing the pain and inflammation. CBD topicals come in many forms such as salves, creams, oils, roll-ons and even bath bombs. When applied directly to the skin, cannabinoids are absorbed locally, penetrating the skin just enough to interact with nearby receptors, triggering targeted relief of the affected area.CBD Topical Cream for local pain

We advocate for using a topical product in conjunction with a sublingual oil as the cannabinoids within a topical do not penetrate deeply enough to reach the bloodstream and deliver them throughout the body. It is typically recommended to apply topicals relatively generously and work them into the skin to improve absorption. Many topicals also include ingredients that offer cooling or warming sensations when applied to the skin, providing soothing relief to the area.

We recommend our Relieve salve from Sana Botanicals as it not only contains CBD but contains menthol crystals and is also loaded with beneficial essential oils of turmeric, black pepper, camphor, cayenne, cinnamon and many more to further aid in relieving discomfort.

As this industry continues to grow, the need for accurate, educational information grows as well. Arming yourself with some basic knowledge when trying to navigate through the extensive selection of CBD products available on the market is crucial. Most importantly, remember to look for quality products with clear labeling and third-party testing to ensure safety.
